In October 2024, during a Supreme Court hearing on a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Isha Foundation, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta supported the Foundation and objected to oral remarks made by the Madras High Court against Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. The High Court had ordered the police to investigate the Foundation’s premises following a habeas corpus petition filed by a father concerning his two daughters, who had been residing at the ashram for over a decade. The daughters, both engineers who had renounced worldly life, appeared before the court and confirmed they were staying at the ashram of their own accord. Despite this, the High Court directed a police investigation into the ashram, leading to objections from both the Isha Foundation and the Union of India regarding the court’s oral observations and the subsequent probe.
